Is Blue Mars really set on Mars?

We like to think so. We hope the context of a terraformed Mars will help make experiences in Blue Mars more approachable to people who may not be familiar with virtual worlds but we don’t require developers to participate in the Mars theme. Developers are welcome to create their own metastories and themes for their Cities and attractions.

Who developed Blue Mars?

Avatar Reality is the sole developer and owner of the Blue Mars development platform. The content inside of Blue Mars belongs to the developers who created it.

What is Blue Mars 2150?

For a brief period when Blue Mars was first being conceived, we discussed calling the world Blue Mars 2150. We settled on just Blue Mars instead. Any reference online to Blue Mars 2150 is probably just using the outdated branding. We are not aware of a separate Blue Mars 2150 project.

Given the success of web services like YouTube, MySpace, Flicker, etc, where amateurs can easily share their unpolished creations, is Blue Mars possibly going against the current trend of user-generated content?

We wholeheartedly embrace user-generated content. All of our tools are free to use and anyone can become a Blue Mars developer. But user generated content on its own won’t make Blue Mars a success. Our goal is to create a system where the very best user generated content can rise to the top and to provide a platform where developers who create excellent content can be rewarded for their work and can be confident that piracy will be effectively managed. Managing security issues and improving our promotional features like search, ratings, and recommendations will be an ongoing focus for Avatar Reality.

What is the difference between a User ID and an Avatar Name?

The User ID is a unique and permanent name used to identify Blue Mars users. The Avatar Name is a non-unique and changeable name. Just as in real life where many people have the same name as someone else and may change their name on occasion, the Avatar Name allows users to represent themselves as they like and change their name when needed. The Avatar Name in combination with the User ID allows users great flexibility in their naming while preventing impersonations and false identification. An upcoming version of the Blue Mars new client will display the Avatar Name rather than the User ID above the Avatar's head. The User ID will be visible from the profile menu that can be accessed by right clicking an Avatar.
